Children spend six hours or more a day on screens

first_imgBBC News 27 March 2015 |Children aged five to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen compared with around three hours in 1995, according to market research firm Childwise.Teenaged boys spend the longest, with an average of eight hours.Eight-year-old girls spend the least – three-and-a-half hours, according to the study.Screen time is made up of time spent watching TV, playing games consoles, using a mobile, computer or tablet.Changing timesThe Connected Kids report, compiled by market researcher Childwise, has collated data from 1995 to the present day to create a comprehensive picture of children’s media habits. Each year, its report, which is not available online, surveys around 2,000 children, aged five to 16.It finds that teenaged girls now spend an average of seven-and-a-half- hours watching screens, compared with 3.5 hours of TV viewing in 1995.Younger children fare slightly better – in 1995, five to 10-year-olds averaged around two-and-a-half-hours of TV.Fast-forward to 2014 and screen time has risen to four-and-a-half hours.Children are also now multi-screening – using more than one device at the same time, for example, watching TV while surfing the internet on a tablet or mobile so some of the screen time will be concurrent.“The main difference from the 1990s is that then TV and magazines were the main ways for connecting kids to the media and now they have different devices from tablets, mobiles, games consoles and they have a much higher screen time,” said research executive Matthew Nevard.Children’s TV viewing habits have changed dramatically, with the majority now watching television via catch-up services and YouTube rather than the traditional TV set, according to the report.YouTube is the most popular on-demand service with more than half of respondents accessing TV and video via the site since 2013.http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-32067158last_img read more

TTCB to investigate mix-up in Bravo exclusion

first_imgPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath has promised to probe the communication breakdown that led to Darren Bravo’s exclusion from the four-day and Super50 setup. It emerged this week that Bravo, the country’s premier batsman, had been excluded from both Red Force squads, despite indicating his availability to head coach Kelvin Williams“That is a matter for the selectors (but) we don’t like what is being portrayed in the public domain,” Bassarath told the NewsDay.“As a responsible organisation, we will have to do our investigation about what transpired. It’s very unfortunate but unless we find out from the people involved, I cannot say anything.”Following media reports he had been excluded from both squads, Bravo clarified via social media that he had informed Williams of his availability for the final match of the ongoing Regional Four-Day Championship against Guyana Jaguars and the first eight fixtures of the Regional Super50 scheduled to bowl off January 30.However, convener of selectors Raphick Jumadeen said he was unaware of this development, also indicating that both squads had already been finalised and would not be altered to accommodate Bravo.Bassarath described the scenario as “unfortunate” and also made it clear the problem was not the fact Bravo had spoken to Williams instead of Jumadeen.“He could have spoken both to the chairman of selectors and the coach. The coach has a good relationship with the senior players and they love Kelvin … I don’t think it’s a problem about who he spoke to,” Bassarath stressed. He added: “It is very unfortunate that something like this could have happened. We thought we would have had our best players playing in this (Super50) tournament.”The development is the latest twist in the saga surrounding Bravo’s career, which has been in turmoil ever since he was sent home in November, 2016 ahead of the Tri-Nations Series in Zimbabwe for his controversial Twitter rant aimed at Cricket West Indies president Dave Cameron.Bravo has not played for Red Force or West Indies since, even though CWI announced last July that his standoff with the board had ended, and he was now eligible for selection. The left-hander declined to be considered for selection for the one-day tour of England last September, and has since plied his trade in the Bangladesh Premier League.Only recently, the 28-year-old said he was still committed to representing West Indies in the future.last_img read more

first_imgAbout the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Hughton pleased with Brighton attacking optionsby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveChris Hughton is happy with the attacking players at his disposal. The Brighton manager knows they will have to be at their best to stay in the league this season. And he believes that he has enough options in attack to make that happen.Hughton said to The Argus: “It’s what I want [competition for places]. Florin, I thought, had done really well in the game he came on in (Crystal Palace) and the game he started at Huddersfield.”I didn’t think he did so well in the last game at Burnley but that might have been a consequence of having not played and having a big impact in the two games before.”Of course, we’ve got Glenn who has scored goals.”But that’s what I want. I think it’s good and Locadia as well, who will feel aggrieved he hasn’t played more.”We will need that type of competition going into the second half of the season.”Brighton are 13th in the table, nine points away from the bottom three places. last_img read more

first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Arsenal boss Emery takes squad out for ‘unity’ dinnerby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal boss Unai Emery is demanding unity from his players. The Sun says he ordered Arsenal players to show “solidarity” to the outside world during a team dinner called straight after the Watford debacle.Gunners stars dined at trendy Mayfair restaurant Novikov with the management following their catastrophic defensive performance in the 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road.In an attempt to salvage team spirit, under-pressure boss Emery told his squad that the critics were watching for their reaction. The Spaniard ordered them to put on a united front — despite huge cracks and factions developing within the dressing room.Emery wants to portray the image that the players all get on and are a tightly-knit unit. But that could not be further from the truth after skipper Granit Xhaka claimed Arsenal’s players were “scared”.According to Arsenal insiders, there is a lack of discipline at the club and Emery has struggled to exert any authority over an unruly dressing room. last_img read more
