Wasco Skylights will open a new manufacturing facility in Reno, Nevada, by next April in hopes of expanding its distribution west of the Rocky Mountains and keeping pace with industry giant Velux, company CEO Jeff Frank says.About 5% of Wasco’s business now comes from the dozen states west of the Rocky Mountains, Frank says, a market that represents about 26% of all construction spending.Wasco, founded in 1935 as a flashing company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, currently produces a line of residential and commercial skylights from a single plant in Wells, Maine. (For Martin Holladay’s review of Wasco skylights, see New Green Building Products .) The manufacturing plant needs to be near its customersSome 45% of the company’s business is in custom skylights, but Frank says Wasco is too far from Western markets to get standard products to buyers on a competitive timetable.“If you look at residential skylights, you need to have it to the guy’s door in two days,” Frank says. “Velux has kind of driven that. They guarantee 48-hour delivery anywhere in the United States. For me to make it in Maine, and ship it to Seattle, I’m going to have six days of freight in there. It’s kind of a snowballing effect.”Frank says he hopes to have a new plant operating by April 1. It will produce both standard and custom skylights. The company is currently looking for a building of between 40,000 and 50,000 sq. ft. and plans to hire 10 people or less to start.Reno is a “perfect location,” Frank says because it is 900 miles or less from all major west coast markets and is a transportation hub for that part of the country. Wasco will continue to make its own vinyl extrusions for skylight frames in Maine and ship them to Reno for assembly.
Surveillance at the Heart of Smart Cities How IoT Will Play an Important Role in Traffic … Donal Power Indian Railways is undertaking a smart city makeover for its stations in 10 cities around the country. As reported by Indian gadget news site BGR, the railroad recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Urban Development. The MOU will see the transformation of stations in 10 cities to further the agenda of the nation’s smart city strategy.India previously announced plans to develop 100 smart cities around the country by 2022. By last month 60 of the cities have been chosen under the ambitious plan that the government hopes will act as a springboard to modernize outdated urban infrastructure across India.Specifically, the new agreement paves the way for redevelopment that enhances passenger amenities, improves station access and optimizes utilization at target railway stations. The stations targeted for smart city redevelopment are: Varnasi, Bhubaneswar, Thane, Puducherry, Lucknow, Jaipur, Kota, Tirupati, Sarai Rohilla in Delhi and Margao in GoaThe project is a joint venture between the Railway Ministry, which will hold primary responsibility, and the Urban Development Ministry.“Railway stations have been the core of city development and have become congested over time and their redevelopment offers immense opportunities for changing city landscape,” said Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. How local smart cities are happeningMeanwhile, Urban Development will take the lead in negotiating with various states and city governments in order to integrate the station redevelopment into local smart city strategies.“This convergence based city development will result in qualitative improvement in city life,” said Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu. He said that the station project could be a good fit for the National Buildings Construction Corporation which has previously self-financed redevelopment initiatives.Prabhu added that other sources of support for the station redevelopment project may come from outside the country. He said such countries as the U.K., Germany, Japan, France, Belgium and South Korea have expressed interest in the project. To drum up further interest, India is planning to host a round table next week where international and domestic bankers will discuss opportunities for financing aspects of the initiative. Manguben Makwana will never forget the night of June 29. The 32-year-old gave birth to a baby in the vicinity of the Gir forest in an ambulance after midnight, surrounded by a group of lions. Even as she gave birth to a boy, 12 lions, including three males, emerged from the adjacent forests and surrounded the vehicle, blocking its passage near a remote village in Amreli district.During this ordeal, which lasted for around 20 minutes, the paramedical staff of the ‘108’ ambulance stayed calm while assisting Ms. Makwana. Chetan Gaadhe, emergency management executive of ‘108’ in Amreli, said the encounter occurred around 2.30 a.m. on Thursday when the ambulance was shifting Ms. Makwana, a resident of Lunasapur village, to the government hospital in Jafarabad town. “On the way, Ms. Makwana realised that she would give birth any time, as the head of the baby was protruding. Emergency management technician Ashok asked the driver Raju Jadav to stop the ambulance,” said Mr. Gaadhe. While Ashok contacted a doctor, the pride of lions, sensing human presence, emerged from the nearby bushes. “Though Jadav, who is a local, tried to scare them away, the lions refused to budge. Some of them even sat in front of the vehicle,” Mr. Gaadhe said. “Later, Mr. Jadav started the ambulance and moved slowly forward so that lions would give way. Seeing the vehicle move and the blinking of lights, the big cats eventually moved and gave way to the ambulance,” he said.
Deepak Dhavaliakar, president of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s ally in Goa, on Saturday said that the State administration under ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has been paralysed for over eight months and demanded that Mr. Parrikar should hand over charge to someone else until he recovers. The central committee of MGP on Saturday passed a resolution in this regard and decided to join a protest of mining dependents of Goa, to be held at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, to urge the National Democratic Alliance to resolve the impasse caused by the mining ban at the earliest.“The MGP will participate in the protest meet by mining dependents seeking resumption of mining in Goa,” Mr. Dhavalikar said. The Supreme Court banned mining in Goa in February, quashing granting of second renewals of 88 iron ore mining leases. The apex court also directed the State government to allot the leases afresh.Goa BJP leaders and national president of BJP, Amit Shah, have said that the Central government will work out a mechanism to resume mining in Goa at the earliest.
